Dorothy found a broken keyboard and set it up with a book for a monitor. She's "playing Minecraft." This consists of repeatedly saying "I can't see you, Gloria, where are you? Dis server is laggy." "I'm going to go kill the extra bunnies now." "Go to bed, the sky is bedtime, guys." "Ooh a creeper! Aaaa!" Note: she has never actually played Minecraft, but has been drenched in it since before birth.

This small but fierce bug just stung Gloria's leg! We think it's a velvet ant, or cow killer ant, which is actually a wingless wasp. They are so called because the sting is said to be ferocious enough to kill a cow. We Gleesons are made of sterner stuff, one hopes. According to Gloria, however, it sure hurt like hell! She has been given Benadryl, Tylenol and a bag of frozen peas for an ice pack and says it feels a little better now after some late night Gravity Falls to wait for the meds to kick in. Good grief the poor kid's had a day!

Sigh.

Aw, don't worry Gloria! The doctor is just going to need to cut off one of your fingers. You'll still have nine more!

So, being a.) human and b.) pregnant, I am personally concerned about the Zika virus. I live in central Oklahoma, and we have A. aegypti mosquitoes, though not year-round. I am at low risk for Zika.
That doesn’t mean I’m not a little worried.
So, on that note, I went off looking for ways to repel Zika skeeters. Those ways are the following:
DEET is greasy and more toxic than the other options, and not much more effective. It works against ticks and mosquitoes when applied to skin, but can damage fabric and smells bad.
Permethrin works well for mosquitoes but less so for ticks as they are growing in resistance. It’s still pretty good though. It’s applied to clothing but not to skin. It lasts for a long, long time, much longer if clothing is machine washed in cool to warm water, air-dried, and not ironed.
Picaridin is as effective as DEET against both mosquitoes and ticks, has no odor and no greasy feel.
Lemon eucalyptus oil works as well as DEET on skin, but lasts for a shorter time. It’s still fine for hours, though. It has a very strong citrus/grass smell. Not unpleasant, just very strong.
We are going with picaridin. Specifically Sawyer Premium with 20% Picaridin. It has no detectable odor, even to my pregnant nose, and felt like nothing on my skin. I could barely notice that I had something on in the crease of my inner elbow, but only if I paid attention.

Last one. Really trying to get a shot of her haircut. I trimmed about three inches of curls off to eliminate tangling – with luck, anyway.

Gloria and Trixie haven't ever really explored the rods. I got rid of ours when Dorothy became mobile and that wasn't anywhere to keep them without baby interference. I just bought a new set – to be used upstairs only – and they are deep in, even refusing offers of Minecraft from Gil and their friend Asha. Next week I'll bring out the lab sheets. #unschooling #homeschooling #miquon #math
