Pizza night
Homemade pizza tonight! Bede and Trixie are doing the toppings. #yum
We used to make this more often, but convenience and a bigger food budget kept us in takeout pizza for the last few years. Now that we’re on a shoestring we’re back to it. And it’s so good! Better than most takeout and take-and-bake. Here’s the crust I used for the wheat pizza and here’s the one for the no-grain low carb pizza.

Math book is dead, long live math book
Gilbert finished this book today! He started it mid-March because he wanted to learn it. He’s worked though it with my encouragement, but no coercion, every weekday since. Next up is Saxon 76. This is one of the ways unschooling looks in our family.
Some of the kids are more structured than the others, and that changes for each kid as they grow, too. So far, so good.

Redesigning the Speculum
When Stewart and her team set off to redesign the speculum, they knew what they were up against. Plus, Stewart says, “I hadn’t even seen a speculum.”
So before they started researching or sketching ideas out, Stewart and Kumar listed the things that had bothered them in gynecological exams. There was the noise (like a can opener), the temperature (freezing cold), the feeling inside (as if someone was stretching your insides like a rubber band). When they acquired a set of specula, one plastic and one metal, they realized they needed to change the aesthetics too. These things looked like medieval torture devices.

#ontheneedles is a Sweater for Somebody. This merino yarn was for wool soakers for Perry but it's just too unstructured. I'm knitting this top down in the biggest size I think I have the yardage for, and it should come out as about a men's small or women's medium. It reminds me of the earth toned kitchen wallpaper of my 1970s childhood.

Birthday breakfast for the next teenager!

book club
Today was the second meeting of the MGBC. We read Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen, and discussed it over a meal that Brian would have eaten. We had smoked trout, fresh raspberries, and, lacking turtles, farm chicken eggs. We also had orange TANG. The other club member brought the food he would have been dreaming of if he had spent two months in the Canadian wilderness – two dozen glazed donuts.
So a balanced meal.

Doctor says they crumbled off because they are crazy weak – Swiss cheese teeth – and glitched out when Per was an embryo. He says to keep an eye on them and we'll try to keep them as long as possible. If they start to hurt he'll give Perry a local and pop them out, bing. I'm so happy to hear that course of treatment! None of his other teeth are malformed. Yay!
