last but not least

I’ve recently switched to last.fm for my music moochery. I was using Pandora but I kept hitting their listening cap, and if I’m going to fork out money there had better be no ads. So far I like it fine, but I’m not sure if I like it better than Pandora. They are pretty different systems. I think Pandora may be more flexible in terms of crafting a particular station’s sound, but I don’t really know.

My music tastes aren’t very eclectic. I like The Police and bands that I think sound like them, or who remind me of them in some way. Lots of jangly melodic guitars, clever lyrics, strong percussion. So I like U2, Coldplay, Peter Gabriel, and bunches of more recent bands that honestly sort of fade together in my ears and all seem to get tagged ‘indie’, so I guess that’s what the kids are calling it nowadays.

Who do you like?

  1. Depeche 🙂 erasure book of love is awesome but not recent and very hard to find “lullaby” I had to pay 20 at a cd store to order a used one for me.
I also like various “new” hits and I haven’t a clue who most of them are..Katy Perry is one, and all the good ol 80’s stuff still makes me smile

  2. I’m eclectically varied in my music tastes. Honestly, I love a little bit of everything! Right now my go-to CDs are the Twilight soundtrack (heehee, sorry, Fee!) and Darlene Zschech’s (Christian artist) Kiss of Heaven. And in a couple of weeks I’m going to a Toby Keith concert. How’s that for variety?!

  3. I guess I would categorize my taste as indie/eclectic/ acoustic/ veering less and less into pop as I get older. There are a fair amount of single songs by indie-ish artists I like, but bands that actually have a whole catalog of music I love seem to be fewer and farther between than they used to– which makes my current top 2 (Sufjan Stevens & HEM) all that more precious to me.

Sufjan Stevens — indie, possibly Christian-based, but if it is, it isn’t of the hit-you-over-the-head variety, equally skilled at stripped down acoustic as complex orchestral rock. Good songs to check out by him: Virtually anything off of his album “Come On Feel the Illinoise!,” specifically the title track, Chicago, Jacksonville, They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back From The Dead!! Ahhhh! (that is actually the full title of the song, brevity is not his strong point), Decatur, and Casimir Pulasky Day. His earlier album “Michigan,” is more acoustic, but good songs off that album include: The Upper Peninsula, Holland, Romulus, and For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti. Other favorites include: The Mistress Witch from McClure and That Was the Worst Christmas Ever!

HEM — I would call their genre alt-country/ folk/ americana. Think soundtrack to O Brother, Whereart Thou- esque. Their album “Rabbit Songs” is virtually flawless. My favorites are When I Was Drinking, Halfacre, Betting On Trains, All That I’m Good For, and The Cuckoo. Favorites off of later albums include Hollow, The Fire Thief, An Easy One, Reservoir, He Came to Meet Me, Not California, We’ll Meet Along the Way, and a fantastic cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Valentine’s Day.

Other bands I like a few songs from (despite several of them being overplayed) include Death Cab for Cutie/ The Postal Service, Okkervil River, Neko Case, Aimee Mann, Ari Hest, Kings of Leon, MGMT, the Killers, I could go on… (oh, wait, I did!)
